In the area of the Cecina Valley one can find vast zones
covered by forest a natural resource that is rich
in animal and plant species. Together these areas form the Berignone-Tatti and Monterufoli
Forests, public property under the management
of the Comunità Montana (Mountain Forest Management)
of the Cecina Valley, which is included in the system of
Protected Areas of the Region of Tuscany.
The two forest systems are located on the right bank and
to the south of the mid-course of the Cecina Berignone Forest
is located on the border of the Province of Siena. At one
time it was famous for wild boar hunting and was used for
a long time to produce the fire wood used in Volterras saltworks.
The
Tatti brush just to the north of Berignone was known in the
last century as the "woods for the poor" as
it provided the Volterra countryside with its firewood.
